Compared to most cactus species in Death Valley, these cacti look like they've lost their spines. You could even call them cute. But try and pet them, and your fingers will come away with dozens, perhaps hundreds, of thin, almost invisible spines, like the ones you get from nettles. They seem a little less cute and defenseless at that point.
