We had a small earthquake in the Eastern Sierra yesterday

It was quiet here at Topaz Lake, so I was able to hear an odd, deep bass rumbling (like in the movie Earthquake), and I was wondering what it was.  Then a few short seconds later, maybe 2 or 3 seconds, a sharp jolt hit the house, creating some sharp creaking in the wood framing as the whole house moved, as if hit by a truck.

I looked up the earthquake today, and although the magnitude was only 2.5, it was very close, perhaps a couple of miles away.  I'm glad it didn't damage the house… with ice on the lake for the past few days, this would be cold time to do any unplanned camping!  We're in a geologically active area, but fortunately most of the earthquakes are pretty small.  The largest one recorded in recent history was 6.0 on September 12, 1994.

  1. So glad to know that you are all right.
Beautiful photo. Lovely soft colors and doubled by the reflections in the water. Looking so peaceful and serene. The ice adding adding extra interest to the whole scene.
