Coming March 1-3 in Ocatillo Wells State Vehicle Recreation Area, California
In the Ocatillo Wells State Vehicle Recreation Area adjacent to Anza-Borrego State Park, there will be fireworks sponsored by the by Tierra Del Sol 4×4 Club as part of their annual Desert Safari event: http://www.tds4x4.com/

In 2012 +Lori Hibbett and I led a photowalk in Anza-Borrego and Ocatillo Wells.  This album contains photos from those parks, and quite a few from that photowalk.  We were fortunate that +Lori Carey joined us, since she knew about the annual event and the timing of the fireworks.

The event and fireworks area held in the Truckhaven Hills area of OWSVRA, a few miles West of Salton City.  As you pass the camps of thousands of off-roaders and start to climb some hills, look for one of many turnouts on the south side of the road with a view over the event.

I can't find the date and time in this year's event information… hopefully someone will comment with that below.  It's a unique experience to witness, perhaps best described as what you might have seen if the characters in the movie Mad Max had discovered a large cache of high quality fireworks.

I had a blast shooting with so many G+ photographers last May, but I won't be able to make it this year; I'm completing my book of Southern California landscape photography locations (including ones shown in this album).  I hope to get that done and get back out to join everyone soon!  Meanwhile you can see many location and photo nominations in the new Southern California Photography community on G+:

  1. The event is this coming weekend, I should have the date/time of the fireworks on Monday but I would assume the fireworks are Saturday night. I was the fortunate one that you added this event to our weekend…As you know I sold many of my shots from last year to the event organizer and I just received a message from them telling me that Fireworks America and Tierra del Sol would like me back to shoot again this year…will have to see what I can work out for them with little notice.

  2. Hi Jeff it's Sue again,I have a ? In the pics w/ those amazing rock formations it looked so tight it reminded me of the poor guy who had to cut his own arm off ,where u in the area? ,& was that Dino cut out real? ( don't want to sound dumb) thx Sue 🙂

  3. +Susan Kolbasuk Yes, many of the sculptures are about 10-15 feet high, made from rusty steel, and many are meant to represent animals which live in the Anza-Borrego area in the past.  I believe there are 100+ sculptures in the area.

The slot canyons in the Anza-Borrego area are similar to the one portrayed in 127 hours, but I believe that the one the movie was based on was in Utah.

  4. It's always feast or famine +Jeff Sullivan haha!
The fireworks will be on Saturday night immediately following the raffle which starts at 7pm and everything should wrap up by 10pm, so I would target being in place no later than 9pm for anyone who is in the area and plans to attend.
