Blue Hour at The Racetrack

Light painting among the "sailing stones" during the Spring in Death Valley photography workshop that +Lori Hibbett +Bill Wight and I led last week.

These rocks move across the surface of this lake bed, leaving tracks in the clay.  No one has ever seen them move, but the U.S. Geological Survey has studied and mapped their movement over multiple years.  The mechanism of movement seems to be periods of high winds while the clay surface is wet and slippery.

  1. There's a notice next to Racetrack Playa not to remove any rocks from the playa. An excellent request, and one to be followed, to be certain.

So when I was there in December 2011, I added a few rocks. I wonder if they've gone anywhere.
