California has a few sites with red sandstone. One of the most intricately eroded is Red Rock Canyon State Park, between Mojave and Ridgecrest. The various layers of sediment have different hardness, which causes the erosion patterns to change as wind and water cut through the rock.

Nice Jeff. I know this spot.
I was fortunate to visit Red Rock Canyon when staying in Vegas on my honeymoon. It was so peaceful and beautiful.
Yes +Kirk Johnson, Red Rock, Red Rum, something like that, lol.
+Jeff Sullivan Thanks! So this is http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=631 (the state park in California), not http://www.blm.gov/nv/st/en/fo/lvfo/blm_programs/blm_special_areas/red_rock_nca.html (the national conservation area near Las Vegas)?
Superbe
that's amazing
Correct, it's the state park up near Mojave. It's not the Red Rock Park accessed off of Old Topanga Canyon Road near Los Angeles (I briefly visited that earlier this month as well).
one day I would like to visit
