Getting Your Feet Wet in Ballooning

It's always fun to see the experienced pilots skimming the surface of the water.  If they get too hot, they can let the basket sink a bit and start to fill with water.  It can be dangerous if you get too much water inside, because it takes a lot of heat to create enough lift to raise the extra water weight, but if you use too much heat too fast, you can melt the top of your balloon!

  1. a dangerous thing to do, letting the basket fill with water, especially as a lot of pilots tend to put false floors in them (solid) Its takes so much heat to lift the balloon out, there's a danger of burning the top out of the balloon. but I have to say that having a dip is a lot of fun if you get it right

  2. oh and I should add, one year in Lorraine, myself and another occupant were accused of p'ing in the basket by some french people when we landed in a stubble field. they didn't realise that the floor was wet because we "went in". :))))) oh well, it made them all laugh

  3. Thanks everyone!
In past years they actually would hold a fishing derby from the balloons +Rickard Ehleskog, but perhaps after a few of the balloons were snagged by fishing lures, someone decided that having sharp objects along may not be the best idea during a balloon ride.
