Bodie Threatened by Fire

At last report this fire set by lightning yesterday was 5000 acres and 4 miles from Bodie, and 194 people were fighting it.  With thunderstorms in the forecast, the 25MPH winds driving the fire yesterday afternoon could return.  Hopefully the rain showers forecast for this afternoon and tomorrow afternoon will pass this way and knock it down.

So far I'm counting on our workshop scheduled for this Saturday night to still be on!

  1. Wow! How very sad. Another spectacular area under siege from wildfires. This has been such a tragic year for our western landscapes. Praying that they'll be able to get it controlled soon.

  2. "The fire has crossed the California state line and is now approximately three miles east of Bodie State Historical Park (CA State Parks), where structure protection fire engines are stationed and dozer lines are being built.
Access to the Park is being closed this evening until further notice; CA State Route 270 (Bodie Road) and the Cottonwood Road running north from CA State Route 167 will be closed to all traffic except fire and emergency vehicles."

  3. It's promising that although there's definitely some lingering smoke in the Mono Basin this morning, there's no giant plume of smoke rising into the sky on the left side of the horizon in the image from the Mono lake Web cam, like there was yesterday afternoon:

Today is forecast to be another major storm day, so it'll be critical for crews to get a handle on the fire this morning, before the winds start again.

The latest update a few minutes ago has the fire at 12,600 acres and 15% contained.

  4. I'm on a peak overlooking Bodie, and it's looking peaceful down there tonight. Roads are a little muddy, so it looks like the area got a good soaking with rain. The park and Bodie Road CA-270 are scheduled to open today Thu Aug 22.
