Comet Lovejoy currently rises in the northeast sky around 4:30 am. I look for it around 5 am after it rises above any haze on the horizon, but light from the oncoming sunrise can start to interfere by around 5:45 or so. This image was captured for 30 seconds at f/4, ISO 6400 at 200mm focal length on a Canon 5D Mark II camera, using a tracking mount. On the astronomical brightness scale the comet's current brightness of 6 or so is brighter than the threshhold for naked-eye visibility of approximately 8, but I can't make it out well until I take a wide angle shot to find it in the sky, then gradually zoom in from there until I've reached maximum focal length for the lens.
