Bodie State Historic Park

I'm scaling back to three night workshops in Bodie this year: one individual night session and two with special access to interiors the morning after the night session.

Reshared post from +Bodie Photo Workshops

Bodie workshops dates for 2014
They're here!
May 3 – Night – sunset 7:48, Milky Way rises around 11, 14% moon sets 12 midnight.

July 5 – Night – sunset 8:21, 50% moon up during entire Bodie session (sets 1 am).
July 6 – Sunrise & interiors sunrise 5:40 am.

Aug 30 – Night – sunset 7:27, 17% moon sets 10:09.
Aug 31 – Sunrise & interiors sunrise 6:24 am.

The PayPal registration/payment buttons are up on my blog:

Due to a new requirement for advance payment of a non-refundable deposit of thousands of dollars, I'm offering fewer night workshops at Bodie this year and fewer Bodie workshops overall.

On the positive side, I had one registration for the may 3 workshop while I was building the second and third registration buttons.  Get the spaces before they're gone!

  1. For Milky Way +Maximilian Laue  I have to give a slight advantage to May.  Sure, it'll be rising from 10-11 pm, but for the last 2 hours it'll be streaming across the sky across the top of landscape orientation photos (tilted up to the left).  In August the Milky Way starts vertically oriented and slightly west of south, which means it's also already dropping in the sky.  The horizon is nice and low to the south in Bodie, but at least part of the brightest part of the Milky Way will be setting by the time we depart at 1 am.

Some people may prefer shooting right down Main Street with the Milky Way vertical.  Like I said it's a slight difference and some people may want more portrait orientation opportunities (that works great for a magazine cover for example)

I have screen shots of the Milky Way orientation at twilight and when we leave each night (I do my homework before scheduling these).  I'll try to post them somewhere ASAP and share a link.

  2. I just placed screen shots showing Milky Way position on each night at the end of this album +Maximilian Laue. Aug 30 is actually interesting for the moon setting at 10:09, which will be about 9:50 that it drops behind the nearby hills, leaving the sky dark for the rest of the session.  We'll have a lot more time for night shooting that far from the long days of June/July around the summer solstice.

  3. These were taken at Bodie State Historic Park, a ghost town in California.  That church photo was taken during twilight, and the long exposure of 30 seconds picked up the fading sunset color while we used flashlights to illuminate the church, which otherwise would have been underexposed and plagued with noise.  +William Sabliet
The park closes at 6 pm, but I've arranged to bring groups of photographers in after closing hours.
