  • Photoshop... darkroom, same thing.  Ansel would manipulate the image entering his camera, then spend a dozen hours further manipulating the image in the darkroom.    There was a lot of gaudy over-processing around in Ansel Adams' day as well, such as hand-tinting photos with color, and it had about as much lasting appeal as today's latest fads will.  Anyone fool can drag sliders in an editing program and make an image look wacky.  Overcoming the limitations of a single exposure to make a scene look more like what we perceive onsite, or to influence a result without having the adjustments take over and distract from the subject of the photo... those skills are a little more uncommon.
