Double Rainbow Over Bodie

This photo is from 6:30 pm or so after the Friends of Bodie Day last Saturday.  There was lightning as late as 5:30 pm, so the park cancelled the Bodie Bluff tours and kicked everyone out of the park by 6:30.  +Lori Hibbett and I saw the sunlight break through and knew there might be a rainbow, so we dashed up the Masonic Road to place the rainbow over the town.  As it turned out, we got a double!

  1. Great question +Magic Dave.  Rainbows are caused by light passing into a rain drop, reflecting out, and getting "refracted" along the way to separate different wavelengths of light, which we see as colors.  The second rainbow is due to light bouncing twice inside.  This changs both the angles and the order in which the light is refracted, so the rainbow is in a different place with the colors reversed.  I like how the top of the inside rainbow changes to a multi-layered "supernumerary" rainbow, like this one: https://www.flickr.com/photos/jeffreysullivan/14850982672/
I haven't been able to find an adequate description of how they're made, but apparently it's more complcated than simple geometry and optics.
