Jupiter and Moon Rising

The moon rises with Jupiter (and several of its moons) on Saturday, August 23.  A short while later Venus joined them, below Jupiter.  You can see the full disk of the moon, even though the sunlit part is only a slim crescent, because the side of the moon facing us is illuminated by "earthshine": the light of the entire face of the earth reflecting sunlight back onto the area of the moon in shadow.

The light from a slim crescent moon is dim enough that I was able to use a sensitive exposure (high ISO, wide aperture), close to what I use on dark nights, so you can pick up a lot of detail in the foreground and sky, even though it's twilight / blue hour.
