Family Explorations

I'm looking forward to spending some time with my kids next week.  Some of our plans last Summer had to be cancelled at the last minute when my vehicle went into the shop for a month, so we may head down to Death Valley for a few days.  Exploring the park has kept us pretty busy in recent years.  We visited in January, but I was on my way back to Death Valley in March when my transmission failed the prior time, so I feel like I have some lost time to make up for, both with them and in the park!

Death Valley is the largest American national park outside of Alaska, so there's no lack of natural treasures waiting to be discovered.  Most of the park's roads are not paved, and few of the visitors leave the paved roads, so as long as we avoid the have dozen sights that everyone visits, we tend to have the places we're visiting to ourselves.

  1. Death Valley is one of my favorite photographic locations. I'm looking forward to returning in late January. Hoping for water on the Badwater salt flats.
What an awesome thing to do with your family!
I look forward to taking my son there soon.

  2. Belle lumière. Son regard en dit long sur le lien qu'elle a avec le photographe.  Great light. Beautiful little girl.  Her eyes says she has confidence & loves the photograph.  Nice pic! Nice poem too.

  4. I could tell you +Jagdishkumar Jain that I used the Canon 5D Mark III, 5D Mark II, 40D, XTi, and XT to take these, but does the pan a cook uses explain the result of the his cooking?

The most important element is vision, knowing exactly what you want before you set out to capture the photo.  Only once you have a clear vision in mind can you know how to approach the subject to achieve the result you desire, and the process of capturing a great landscape often starts weeks or months earlier, knowing the right season, sun and moon angles, and a lot more.  There are concepts I want to capture that I've been after for years, and which may take many more years to accomplish.

  5. +Jeff Sullivan I LOVE your first paragraph…specifically, the last 14 words!

I tell some of my students the story of a photographer and writer pair in NY back in the '60s or so. Every time the photographer won an award or prize, the writer friend would call to compliment, but always offering something of the expense of the camera used. The photographer tried in vain to explain that the tools were only a small part of the process.

Then the writer won a Pulitzer for a story. The photographer immediately called to congratulate, and exclaim that the story must have been done an a real expensive typewriter.

The writer got the concept, then.
