There's a live +YouTube / +Google+ hangout featuring +Philip Plait live now to discuss Asteroid 2012 DA14 which just passed by the earth:
Asteroid 2012 DA14 Nearmissapalooza
If you view the recorded version of the hangout later, he also discussed the large meteor which broke up over Russia this morning and reportedly injured up to 1000 people.
The photo below is a much smaller meteor which I captured during the annual Persied meteor shower. I'm receiving thousands of views on my Perseid meteor shower time-lapse videos over on YouTube this morning, given the interest in the meteor over Russia:

Here's Phil Plait's report on Slate discussing the meteor over Russia:

Thanks everyone! It's crazy, but my oldest meteor shower time-lapse video on YouTube is up to 36,000 views in the past couple of days:
Perseid Meteor Shower
People don't seem to mind that it's probably not the meteor (in Russia) that they were originally looking for. Maybe they're arriving via YouTube referral after seeing a fair number of videos on the Friday event.
Awesome!
Very interesting ! 😉
Nice!

On this moonless night +James Kuhn I used a Canon 5D Mark II, 30 seconds at f/2.8, ISO 6400, 16mm focal length.
