At last report this fire set by lightning yesterday was 5000 acres and 4 miles from Bodie, and 194 people were fighting it. With thunderstorms in the forecast, the 25MPH winds driving the fire yesterday afternoon could return. Hopefully the rain showers forecast for this afternoon and tomorrow afternoon will pass this way and knock it down.

So far I'm counting on our workshop scheduled for this Saturday night to still be on!

In the foreground is Bodie State Historic Park just north of Mono Lake, California +Jennifer Beck. The fire over the hill is near the old mining town (site) of Aurora, Nevada.
Man I hope it doesn't reach Bodie, that would be a true tragedy.
Wow! How very sad. Another spectacular area under siege from wildfires. This has been such a tragic year for our western landscapes. Praying that they'll be able to get it controlled soon.
Bodie is a maintained ghost town in California, on the eastern side of the Sierras.
Yikes.
Oh, bad news :-O
Hope for favorable winds and firefighting conditions.
🙁 Hope everyone stays safe and Bodie stays safe, and anyone who lives in area has their home spared.
Never made it to Bodie when I lived in Mammoth but would be awful if anything happened. Fingers crossed and stay safe to the fire crews out there.
woah not good. Best of luck for any case here, really hope I get to visit it again.

It is now 12K acres (update 46min ago)
The smoke from the fire shows up on the Mono Lake Web cam: http://www.monolake.org/today/mlcam
"The fire has crossed the California state line and is now approximately three miles east of Bodie State Historical Park (CA State Parks), where structure protection fire engines are stationed and dozer lines are being built.
Access to the Park is being closed this evening until further notice; CA State Route 270 (Bodie Road) and the Cottonwood Road running north from CA State Route 167 will be closed to all traffic except fire and emergency vehicles."

vow great short jeff vry super & love this pic
Keeping my fingers crossed, I hope nothing happens to Bodie. Checked the Inciweb website, it appears to be under control…
It's promising that although there's definitely some lingering smoke in the Mono Basin this morning, there's no giant plume of smoke rising into the sky on the left side of the horizon in the image from the Mono lake Web cam, like there was yesterday afternoon:

Today is forecast to be another major storm day, so it'll be critical for crews to get a handle on the fire this morning, before the winds start again.
The latest update a few minutes ago has the fire at 12,600 acres and 15% contained.
Wow
The Aurora townsite has been protected, several other mine sites are currently under voluntary evacuation all roads to Bodie still closed.
I was hoping that one day I could go out to California to shoot this place! I hope I get my chance one day!
News updated 4h ago, 14300 acres burned, 20%contained, bad news is fire is now advencing towards Bodie +Jeff Sullivan I hope your able to hold workshop there this weekend.
Yes, I would love to visit this place someday as well. There are already so many missed opportunities in life, I hope this is not another!
Yea 68% contained, all roads to Bodie will open today August 22nd, the night workshop will be something out of the ordinary with glowing red orange sky's, I can not wait to see those images +Jeff Sullivan
I'm on a peak overlooking Bodie, and it's looking peaceful down there tonight. Roads are a little muddy, so it looks like the area got a good soaking with rain. The park and Bodie Road CA-270 are scheduled to open today Thu Aug 22.
+Jeff Sullivan we are expecting to see a lot of good stuff!! Can't wait!
Wunderschöne Aufnahme lieber +Jeff Sullivan !!!
Wünsche dir Guten Morgen und einen herrlichen Tag !
