Electric Power Since 1893

This was taken inside the Standard Mill at Bodie State Historic Park, where long distance electric power transmission lines were built by Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Co. to supply power to the mill in 1893.  The power came from Green Creek over 12 miles away, where a hydroelectric plant was built.  This was one of the first applications of long distance electric power lines.  Prior efforts in urban areas ran into difficulties transmitting power at distances over 3 miles.

This is a single exposure shot in RAW format, post-processed in Adobe Lightroom.  This was taken during our workshop on October 13, 2013.  All of our workshops involve special access not available to typical park visitors.  We're waiting for 2014 dates for sunset/night and sunrise/interior access: http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/bodie-night-photography-workshops/

  1. I do sometimes use HDR to produce realistic images, but in this case I was able to recover sufficient highlight and shadow detail from the RAW file captured on my Canon 5D Mark III.
I do have another photo shoot from that back corner of this room towards the bright windows which did need 5 exposures and HDR, and I'll probably use 7 exposures next time to better capture the outside details seen through the windows.
